Where Government Gets Exposed

Why S.C. Shouldn’t Have Taken Stimulus Money

Scott English, Gov. Mark Sanford’s chief of staff, tells a Dutch Fork High class why South Carolina was wrong to take federal stimulus money.

Among the key issues were the strings attached, he says. “By taking the stimulus money we lock ourselves into our Medicaid program so that we can’t make changes that we need to make,” he says. “So it’s going to ramp up costs to the Medicaid program as our budget is going down. Nobody thought through that process.”
