  • Does the Aiken Corporation pay for the meeting they have at the city office for years?

  • Thank you, Deedee, for challenging these bureaucrats. Will it do any good? Probably not, but at least their incompetence is on the record.

  • Can I say, for the record, that in my experience "small business owners" (like Vaughters and her ilk) are some of the most arrogant, self-serving, politically naive, and stupidly conservative people on the planet.  Their arrogance is truly astounding.  They think because they've operated a business that employs, what?, 2 or 3 people, that they have some sort of keen insight into the workings of government, whether locally, or at the state and federal levels.  This notion that "we've got to run America (or the city of Aiken) like a business" is dangerous.

You want to know what's really ruining this country?  The corporate takeover of everything--including government--the systematic dismantling of the welfare state since Reagan, intense deregulation of private industry in virtually all areas (e.g., you might have read about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico), and this ridiculous emphasis on "personal responsibility" as the key to solving all of our social and economic problems (as though getting cancer, getting laid off, and then losing your health insurance coverage is somehow your fault).

Wake up, people.  It might be convenient or expedient for us to buy into this "Well hell, let's run Aiken like a business" attitude, but business and government are two very different entities.  As well they should be.
